Broome, Australia

We recently finished 6 weeks around Australia and let me tell you, I loved it. If you’ve followed our trip, you know we went to some very remote places. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, you can read the overview of our trip here. One of the areas we did was to drive from Exmouth via Karijini to Broome, Australia.  If you missed our post on Exmouth and Karijini, check it out now. Broome was so hyped up to us by Aussies and other travelers that we had huge expectations.  When we first arrived, it was pretty lackluster.  It’s a tiny beach town, it’s hot, and it’s not pedestrian friendly.  However, the longer I stayed, the more I fell in love with Broome and understood it’s draw.

One of the best things we did in Broome, Australia was a day trip flight over the Horizontal Waterfalls.  It was very expensive, but so worth it.  In this part of Australia, there’s a lot of places you can only get to by flight and let me tell you, they are all pricey.  Seeing as how we had a strict budget, we had to be choosey on what flight or flights we decided to do. I was so pleased with this flight, that I decided it deserved its own post. Here’s 5 reasons you need to do this flight.

1. Value for the Money

Let’s face it, money is a big deal when you travel, there’s no way around that. When you have two or more, it becomes even more expensive, and I’m not here to tell you this is cheap, it’s not.  However, it’s a full day tour, you get a gourmet lunch, you get to land and go for a swim on Cape Leveque, and then you fly back a different route. That means, you get two very different flights out of it. It runs about $550/AUD per person. Yes, that’s a lot of money, but if you know anything about scenic flights, you’ll know that a lot of times you’ll get maybe 20 minutes for $200. We flew with King Leopold Air and were very impressed. They pick you up and drop you off at your hotel as well.

2. The Colors of Broome

As you can clearly see below, there are many colors of Broome.  The red cliffs meet white sand meet turquoise water. It’s amazing to see this from the sky. You’ll also see the swirls of sand with the water on the way back to Broome and the mangrove trees in the ocean.

3. Best Way to See the Falls

You can see the falls by taking a boat to them, but we chose not to do that. I’m sure it’s fun, but it’s fast, it’s crazy and there’s no way to see them from above with this choice. I don’t know if it would be worth doing, as we didn’t do it, but I’m so glad we flew over them. You could really see them and how remarkable they are.

4. You Get to Land at Cape Leveque

Remember those red cliffs from above? Well with this tour, you actually land at Cape Leveque, swim in the lovely water, have a delicious lunch, then fly back to Broome.  It’s definitely worth doing Cape Leveque in conjunction with flying over the falls.

5. So Many Islands

In addition to the islands that create the falls, there are so many more islands than I realized.  When you see photos of the falls, they are always up close, and for good reason, that’s what you want to see. However, there’s an amazing amount of islands around those falls that are really just as amazing.
